1. Anderson Silva
Following another disappointing performance in his title defense against Maia, Silva overcomes adversity for the first time in the UFC to defend his title yet again and remain number one.
2. Chael Sonnen
Following another upset win over another middleweight contender, this time to Marquardt, earned him a title fight which saw him almost outlast the champion to win the middleweight title until a last minute submission.
3. Yushin Okami
Three wins in a row, including one over former title challenger Marquardt, at last earns him a title shot for next year and the number three spot.
4. Nate Marquardt
It wasn’t the best year for Marquardt as he lost two title eliminators to both men ranked above him. Sandwiched in between those losses was a TKO win over the dangerous Palhares to keep him a perennial contender albeit out of title contention.
5. Demian Maia
Maia drops to number five as fighters catch on to his style and he fails to win by submission this year. After a win over Miller, he replaced the injured Belfort in a title fight loss to the champion. Two wins from fighters outside the top five keep him ranked for now.
