2009 UFC Heavyweight Top 5 Rankings

Post UFC 107: Penn vs. Sanchez

1. Brock Lesnar

Lesnar successfully unifies the heavyweight titles against Frank Mir, making the necessary adjustments to get the knockout win he almost got in their first fight.

2. Frank Mir

Mir falls to number two this year for failing to beat Lesnar in their rematch for the unification of their heavyweight titles as he was overpowered in their fight. He closed out the year submitting Cheick Kongo but I can only rank him so high.

3. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira

Nogueira proved the staff infection he suffered just before his fight with Frank Mir may have affected him. In his only fight of 2009, he looked the best he's ever looked up until that point in his UFC career, showing excellent boxing and great submission attempts against Couture.

4. Randy Couture

The Natural's loss to Nogueira was a fight for the ages, but the loss took him further away from title contention, deciding to return to light heavyweight later that year.

5. Junior Dos Santos

Dos Santos got people's attention when he knocked out Fabricio Werdum last year. This year, two more TKO wins over Stefan Struve and Mirko Cro Cop earns him the number five spot.
