2006 UFC Light Heavyweight Top 5 Rankings
Post: UFC 66 - Liddell vs. Ortiz 2
1. Chuck Liddell
Liddell had an exception year adding three more knockout wins to his record against all ranked opponents. There was no doubt who was the number one UFC light heavyweight by the end of the year.
2. Randy Couture
Couture’s only fight this year was his trilogy fight against Liddell in what was the biggest light heavyweight title fight up until that point. Unfortunately for him the fight went just like the last time, losing by knockout, with Liddell's counter striking style being too much for him. We would retire then after the fight.
3. Tito Ortiz
Ortiz returned from his year long layoff struggling to defeat Forrest Griffin. After the split decision win he got two wins over Ken Shamrock that set up a rematch with Liddell, this time for the title. Although he offered more resistance he lost once again to strikes and inspite of the five fight winning streak, he’s got losses to the two men above him placing him no higher than third.
4. Renato Sobral
Babalu added a third submission win in a row this year against Mike Van Arsdale which earned him a title shot against Liddell. But he would lose once again, this time by an uppercut.
